 For over 30 years, Mwalim has been a storyteller/spoken-word artist and musician (pianist, percussionist, guitarist, vocalist), as well as a keynote speaker, and lecturer on a myriad of social, historic, academic, arts, and cultural topics.

His multi-award and fellowship winning, musical storytelling piece, “A PARTY AT THE CROSSROADS” has remained one of his most requested signature performance works. , A scholar of music and folklore of the African Diaspora, “They Never Took Our Drums: Ancestral Codes Buried in Hip-Hop" is an evolving lecture that Mwalim has captivated audiences with, ranging from elementary school students to academic conference participants.

  • Solo Performance works/Storytelling reflective of Black American, Caribbean, and Northeastern Native American cultural roots.

  • Musical Performances (pianist & vocalist. Blues guitarist. Bass and drum accompanists available) - Jazz, Soul, Blues and Funk. Can include The GroovaLottos for an additional fee.

  • Commissioned Theatrical works as playwright and performer.

Background

Mwalim is a tenured professor of English, Communications and Black Studies at UMass Dartmouth, as well as the former Director of Black Studies. His venues have included conventions, academic conferences, corporate events, festivals, schools, colleges & universities, theaters, lecture halls, jails, powwows, museums, temples, cafes, classrooms, and community centers.

As the distinguished playwright in residence for New African Company (New England’s oldest continuous professional Black theater company), Mwalim partners with other theater companies and community organizations to create new works in theater and dramatic performance. Past, on-going, and recurring partnerships and collaborations include: American Repertory Theatre, Boston Center for the Arts, Cape Cod Community College, The Point CDC, Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe, Watertown New Repertory Theatre, American Academy of Arts & Sciences, The Harlem Theatre Company, Providence Black Repertory Theatre, New York City Board of Education, Mashantucket Pequot Museum, Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, Museum of the National Center of African American Art, Bronx Council of the Arts, and the National Black Theatre Festival.
